“Chess Champion Gukesh Returns To Hero’s Welcome In India”
Indian chess star Gukesh Dommaraju, at just 18 years old, returned to a hero’s welcome in Chennai after winning the World Chess Championship. Hundreds of fans gathered at the airport, cheering and waving placards as Gukesh, holding his trophy, made his way through the crowd. “It means a lot to bring the trophy back to India,” he said, visibly moved by the support.
Gukesh’s victory over China’s Ding Liren in Singapore has inspired many young people to take up chess professionally. His win has made him a national sensation, even in a country where cricket is the main sport. Gukesh, who became India’s youngest grandmaster at 12, has now written history as the youngest to hold the World Chess Championship title.
Gukesh will be honored by Tamil Nadu’s government and is set to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon, who praised his achievement for inspiring millions of young people to dream big.
