Vance Visits India For Talks With Modi Amid Tariff Tensions

U.S. Vice President JD Vance arrived in India on Monday for a four-day visit. He will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to strengthen ties and discuss a possible early trade deal. India is hoping to avoid heavy U.S. tariffs by reaching an agreement soon.
Vance’s trip is not just official — he is also visiting the Taj Mahal and attending a wedding in Jaipur with his family. His wife, Usha, is of Indian origin.
Vance landed in New Delhi after visiting Rome, where he met Pope Francis. During his meeting with Modi, they will talk about fair trade practices and growing defense cooperation, as agreed when Modi met President Trump in February.
India is willing to cut tariffs on more than half of U.S. imports, worth $41.8 billion, to finalize a deal. However, President Trump still calls India a “tariff abuser” and “tariff king.”
The U.S. is India’s biggest trading partner, and their trade reached $129 billion in 2024, with India enjoying a $45.7 billion surplus.
India hopes to finalize a trade deal within the 90-day window after Trump paused tariff hikes on major partners, including India.
Experts say Vance’s visit is important, especially with rising U.S.-China tensions. Although no deals are expected to be signed during this trip, both countries are working towards a defense partnership and new arms deals, including Javelin missiles and Stryker vehicles.
More talks are expected during U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s visit to India soon.
