Man Attempts to Shoot Sukhbir Badal at Golden Temple, Arrested”

Chaos erupted at the Golden Temple in Amritsar on Wednesday when a man tried to shoot Sukhbir Singh Badal, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief. The shooter, identified as Narain Singh Chaura, reportedly a former militant, stood close to Badal before firing. A brave sewadar pushed Chaura’s hand upwards, saving Badal’s life.

Sukhbir Badal, in a blue sewadar uniform and seated in a wheelchair due to a fractured leg, was performing ‘tankhah’ (religious punishment) as directed by the Sikh clergy. The punishment included washing dishes, cleaning shoes, and other voluntary acts. Other leaders, like Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and Bikram Singh Majithia, also participated.

SAD leader Daljit Singh Cheema condemned the incident, questioned the Punjab government, and demanded a high-level judicial inquiry. Despite the attack, Badal and his team continued their seva at the holy site.

The punishment stems from the Akal Takht’s decision holding the SAD government accountable for actions during their tenure from 2007 to 2017. Leaders like Badal and Dhindsa wore boards acknowledging their “mistakes” as part of their penance.
