After winning big in the Delhi assembly elections with 48 out of 70 seats, the BJP is now deciding who will be the next chief minister. This time, the party might choose a woman leader from its newly elected MLAs. There is also talk of appointing a deputy CM from a socially representative background.

Who Are the Top Women Contenders?

  • Rekha Gupta (Shalimar Bagh MLA) – National VP of BJP’s women’s wing, won by 29,595 votes.
  • Shikha Roy (Greater Kailash MLA) – Defeated AAP’s Saurabh Bharadwaj in a key contest.
  • Poonam Sharma (Wazirpur MLA) – Won by 11,425 votes.
  • Neelam Pehalwan (Najafgarh MLA) – Secured a massive win with 1,01,708 votes.
  • Smriti Irani – Former Union minister, remains a strong BJP face.
  • Bansuri Swaraj – Daughter of late Sushma Swaraj, won the New Delhi Lok Sabha seat.

When Will the Announcement Happen?

The new CM is likely to be announced after PM Narendra Modi returns from his US visit. The swearing-in ceremony will be a grand event, with NDA chief ministers expected to attend.

Apart from women contenders, other BJP leaders like Vijender Gupta, Ajay Mahawar, Abhay Verma, Kapil Mishra, and Parvesh Verma are also in the race. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said the final decision will be made by the party’s top leadership.
