“Historian Defends Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency: ‘Truth Intact'”
Historian Makkhan Lal, appointed by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) as a ‘subject expert’ for Kangana Ranaut’s biopic Emergency, has defended the film, stating it sticks to the facts and does not portray PM Indira Gandhi negatively. He emphasized that the filmmakers have shown the story with sympathy, and while every leader has flaws, the movie does not highlight the negative aspects of Gandhi’s character. The film is facing delays due to certification issues but could be released with some cuts, as suggested by the CBFC in court.
Makkhan Lal also addressed concerns raised by the Sikh community, particularly over the portrayal of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. He argued that criticizing Bhindranwale is not an insult to the entire Sikh community, questioning why others in the community hold differing views.
Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency, also starring Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, and Mahima Chaudhry, was set to release on September 6 but has been postponed pending CBFC approval.
