Netflix Updates ‘IC814′ Disclaimer with Hijackers’ Names

Netflix India recently addressed the controversy around its series, IC814 – The Kandahar Attack. In response to criticism, Netflix updated the disclaimer to include both the real and code names of the hijackers involved in the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight 814. The web series, directed by Anubhav Sinha, depicts the events of the hijacking by the Pakistan-based terror group, Harkat-ul-Mujahideen.

Social media users and political leaders criticized the series for using aliases like “Shankar” and “Bhola” instead of the real names of the hijackers, accusing the filmmakers of hiding their identities. The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting summoned a Netflix official, Monika Shergill, who clarified that the updated disclaimer reflects the actual names and aliases used during the incident.

The hijacking, which occurred on December 24, 1999, involved five masked men who took over the plane and diverted it to various locations, finally landing in Kandahar, Afghanistan. The hijackers demanded the release of three terrorists—Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, Masood Azhar, and Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar—who were later linked to other attacks, including the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
