Rahul Gandhi in UP Court Today for Defamation Over Amit Shah
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is set to appear in a Sultanpur court today to tackle a defamation case. Special magistrate Shubham Verma has summoned Gandhi to give his statement, warning of serious consequences if he misses this hearing, as he’s already skipped 12!
The case dates back to 2018 when BJP leader Vijay Mishra filed a complaint. Gandhi allegedly called Amit Shah, the BJP leader and Union Home Minister, an “accused” in a murder case during a press conference in Bengaluru. Mishra argues that these remarks hurt Shah’s reputation.
Gandhi was granted bail on February 20, taking a brief break from his ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ to attend court. His lawyer, Kashi Prasad Shukla, explained Gandhi missed the July 2 hearing due to his parliamentary duties.
The charges are based on sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code, which deal with spreading false information and defamation.
