“US Raises Migration Concerns With India”

The new Trump administration is focused on strengthening ties with India. Key areas of collaboration include advanced technologies, defense cooperation, energy, and ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific region. However, the US has also raised concerns about irregular migration while seeking to boost economic partnerships.

In their first bilateral meeting, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed a wide range of issues. Both leaders expressed commitment to enhancing the US-India relationship. Rubio highlighted the need to tackle irregular migration and deepen economic ties.

Reports indicate that about 7.25 lakh undocumented Indians are in the US, with 18,000 deportations expected soon. This issue adds a layer of complexity to the growing partnership, especially given Trump’s previous criticism of India’s trade tariffs.

Despite these challenges, Jaishankar expressed optimism about working closely with Rubio and the new US National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz, to advance strategic cooperation. While trade tariffs might cause some friction, the overall relationship between the two nations is expected to grow stronger.

Jaishankar attended Trump’s oath-taking ceremony in a prominent position, underscoring the importance of US-India ties under the new administration.
