“24.6M Watch Inauguration, Lowest Since 2013”

Around 24.6 million people watched Donald Trump’s second inauguration on TV, making it the smallest audience for a presidential inauguration since Barack Obama’s second in 2013. The Nielsen Company reported that this is a drop from Joe Biden’s 2021 inauguration, which had 33.8 million viewers, and Trump’s first inauguration in 2017, which attracted 30.6 million viewers.

Inauguration viewership has varied over the years, with the highest being 41.8 million for Ronald Reagan in 1981 and the lowest at 15.5 million for George W. Bush’s second term in 2004.

One reason for the lower numbers could be the extended TV coverage this year, from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Eastern. Longer coverage often means lower average viewership as people tune out over time.

During the peak time of 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Fox News led with 10.3 million viewers. ABC followed with 4.7 million, NBC had 4.4 million, CBS had 4.1 million, CNN had 1.7 million, and MSNBC had 848,000 viewers.
