Shares of vaccine makers surged on Tuesday after the US reported its first human death from the H5 strain of bird flu. Moderna’s stock jumped by 11.6%, Novavax gained 10.8%, and CureVac rose 5%. Pfizer also saw a slight increase of nearly 1%.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed that an elderly patient in Louisiana died from the H5 strain. Although 66 cases of H5N1 have been reported in the US in 2024, the CDC emphasized that the public’s risk remains low, as most infections are linked to animal-to-human contact.
While most cases have been mild, health officials are monitoring the spread, especially after California declared a public health emergency due to the outbreak affecting poultry and cattle.
