Every year, Halloween brings a flood of horror movies, and Christmas gets its usual festive films. But around Tax Day, there’s not much movie competition — making it a perfect time for “The Accountant 2” to arrive.
Director Gavin O’Connor brings back Ben Affleck in this sequel to the 2016 film. The first movie wasn’t a huge hit, so the second one didn’t have much to prove — just being a little better was enough. And thankfully, it is.
In this story, Ben Affleck plays Christian Wolff, an accountant with autism who used to help criminals manage their money. Now, he uses his skills to catch bad guys by tracking money trails. One of the best scenes is when he uncovers a human trafficking ring by noticing suspicious pizza box expenses!
Affleck’s quiet, serious style fits better this time around. He’s teamed up with Jon Bernthal, who plays his fun and tough brother, Braxton. Their chemistry brings energy and some good action scenes. However, it takes a while for the movie to get going because of a slow start and a complicated first act.
The movie begins with an FBI boss being attacked at a restaurant, leaving behind a clue: “Find the accountant.” Marybeth Medina, played by Cynthia Addai-Robinson, takes over the case and finds Wolff, who is now living peacefully in an RV and working with young autistic hackers.
Some scenes feel a bit random — like a funny speed-dating moment — but once the brothers reunite, the movie becomes a fun action ride.
