West Bengal is in shock after the brutal rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. Junior doctors across the state have continued their strike, demanding quick justice.
Ongoing Investigation
Police have questioned four junior doctors who had dinner with the victim before the incident. Other hospital staff, including senior doctors and nurses, are also being investigated. Large rallies have taken place near the hospital, with medical staff demanding justice. Junior doctors have given the Kolkata Police until August 14 to complete the investigation, warning of stronger protests if no action is taken.
Healthcare Disruptions
The strike has severely affected healthcare services in West Bengal. With junior doctors on strike, senior doctors have stepped in, leading to long patient lines at government hospitals.
Government Response
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the victim’s family and set an August 18 deadline for the police to solve the case. If the deadline is missed, the case will be handed over to the CBI.
National Concern
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has raised concerns about doctor safety. They’ve asked the Union Health Minister to introduce a law to protect medical staff and make hospitals safer. The incident has sparked protests nationwide, with doctors demanding better protection.
