Tahawwur Rana, accused of helping plan the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, has finally been brought to India. New photos show US Marshals handing him over to Indian officers at a secure location on April 9. He arrived in New Delhi on a special plane Thursday evening and is now in 18-day custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Rana can be seen in a beige prison uniform, standing between US Marshals. The images were shared by the US Justice Department.
Rana is not accused of taking part in the attack directly, but of helping behind the scenes. He reportedly used his Chicago-based immigration business to help David Headley, his childhood friend, enter India with fake documents. Headley helped scout locations for the attacks and gave information to Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
The 2008 Mumbai attacks killed over 160 people and shocked the world. After the attacks, Rana was heard praising the terrorists in a phone call and even said they deserved Pakistan’s top military award.
Rana was first arrested in 2009 for planning a separate terror plot in Denmark. In 2013, a US court sentenced him to 14 years in jail for supporting LeT. Headley later turned informant and was sentenced to 35 years in prison.
India asked for Rana’s extradition in 2020, but it took years due to legal delays. Rana claimed he was too sick to be sent to India, listing many health problems. However, his appeals were rejected, including by the US Supreme Court. Now, after years of delay, he is finally in India to face the law.
