Following External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit to the Maldives, President Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed that his government will always prioritize the Maldives’ interests. He stated that his foreign policy remains unchanged despite previous tensions and the “India Out” campaign by his party.
Muizzu and his team warmly welcomed Jaishankar during his visit, which included launching several projects. The Maldives is struggling with a major economic crisis and has significant debt, totaling around $1 billion by 2026. India has already helped with a $50 million payment to the State Bank of India and will provide another $50 million in September.
India’s support is crucial for the Maldives, especially when other countries like China, the U.S., and Western nations have not offered much help. This assistance also serves as a message to Bangladesh, which is facing its own economic and political troubles and may need to seek India’s support. President Muizzu’s cooperation with India highlights the importance of India’s role in the region’s development, security, and financial stability.
Key development projects in the Maldives, such as the 28 Island Project and Greater Male Connectivity Project, were initiated by India and are vital for the country’s future. Muizzu also acknowledges the importance of Indian security support to protect against threats like drug trafficking and piracy in the Indian Ocean.
Bangladesh, which is dealing with a political crisis and economic challenges, may also need to turn to India for assistance, similar to Sri Lanka’s situation in 2022. President Muizzu’s positive approach to India shows the growing recognition of India’s reliable support under Prime Minister Modi.
