Voting for the Second Phase Begins! On September 25, the second phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections has kicked off, covering 26 seats in six districts. Voting will continue until 6 PM today. Security is tight in key areas like Rajouri, which has seen increased terror attacks in recent years.
More than 2.5 million voters will choose from 239 candidates, including 79 from the Pir Panjal region. This is the first assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir in a decade, following the abrogation of Article 370.
The first phase of voting on September 18 saw a turnout of 61.13% across 24 constituencies. The third phase is scheduled for October 1, with vote counting on October 8.
Notable candidates include Omar Abdullah from the National Conference, contesting in Ganderbal and Budgam, and BJP chief Ravinder Raina, who is running for re-election in Nowshera, Rajouri.
The election commission has set up 157 special polling stations, including ones managed by women and youth, as well as facilities for people with disabilities.
In a recent rally, Rahul Gandhi criticized Prime Minister Modi, while the BJP called his claims “baseless.” The Congress and National Conference have formed an alliance, with the BJP and PDP also in the fray.
