Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is scheduled to meet Lieutenant-Governor V.K. Saxena today at 4:30 p.m. to formally submit his resignation, clearing the way for a new Chief Minister. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will gather at 11:30 a.m. to decide on Kejriwal’s replacement, with an official announcement expected by noon.
Kejriwal’s decision to step down came just two days after his release from prison. He called for early Assembly elections, urging the people of Delhi to decide whether the AAP government remains honest and trustworthy. His former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has also expressed his intent to face the people’s verdict.
Several names are being considered for the new CM post. Top contenders include Delhi ministers Atishi, Gopal Rai, Kailash Gahlot, and Saurabh Bharadwaj. There are also speculations about Kejriwal’s wife Sunita Kejriwal and Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel being in the race. Some sources suggest the party might surprise everyone by selecting a candidate from the minority community, such as Delhi minister Imran Hussain, to regain lost support.
Both the BJP and Congress have criticized Kejriwal’s resignation. The BJP called it a “confession of his crime” following the Supreme Court’s conditional bail in the Delhi excise policy case, while the Congress labeled it “political drama.”
Stay tuned for live updates on the new CM announcement.
