Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced the Income Tax Bill 2025 in the Lok Sabha, aiming to make tax laws simpler and easier for taxpayers. However, as soon as she presented the bill, several Opposition MPs staged a walkout, protesting against it. The exact number of MPs who left the session is still unclear.

What’s Changing in the New Tax Bill?

• The 1961 Income Tax Act had 298 sections when introduced. Over the years, it expanded to 819 sections due to multiple amendments.
• The new Income Tax Bill 2025 has reduced the number of sections to 536, making it shorter and simpler.
• Sitharaman assured that complex terms have been removed, and the law is now written in plain English and Hindi for better understanding.

Opposition’s Concerns

• MP NK Premachandran from Kerala’s Kollam raised concerns over the increase in sections compared to the original 1961 Act.
• TMC MP Sougata Ray called the changes “mechanical.” Sitharaman rejected this, saying the bill brings major improvements and is not just a minor revision.

What Happens Next?

The Finance Minister has proposed that the Income Tax Bill 2025 be sent to a Select House Committee for further review. The terms and conditions for this committee will be decided by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
