The Maharashtra cabinet was expanded on Sunday with 39 ministers taking oath, bringing the total number to 42. However, some MLAs were upset after not being included. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar reassured that ministers would serve for two and a half years, after which others would get the chance. In the expansion, BJP got 19 ministerial posts, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena got 11, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP got 9.
Prominent leaders like NCP’s Chhagan Bhujbal, Dilip Walse Patil, and BJP’s Sudhir Mungantiwar were left out. Six ministers of state were also appointed. The cabinet can have up to 43 members, including the Chief Minister.
Ajit Pawar explained that while everyone deserves a chance, there are limited ministerial positions. Some MLAs, including Union Minister Ramdas Athawale, were upset after their parties did not get any posts. Additionally, Shiv Sena MLA Narendra Bhondekar resigned from his party post after being excluded.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured that ministerial portfolios would be assigned soon and that a “performance audit” of ministers would be done during their tenure.
