“HMPV Cases Normal, No Unusual Outbreak: WHO”

The rise in HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) cases in China has sparked concerns globally, with a few cases also reported in India. However, health experts worldwide, including in India, have reassured the public that HMPV is not a new virus and isn’t a serious threat.

WHO’s Statement on HMPV:

  1. HMPV is Common: HMPV is a typical respiratory virus found in many countries, especially during the winter and spring. Not all countries test for HMPV, which can lead to varying reports of the virus’s presence.
  2. Mild Symptoms: HMPV causes symptoms similar to the common cold. Most people recover within a few days, but in rare cases, it can lead to bronchitis or pneumonia, which may need hospitalization.
  3. Data from China: According to the China Center for Disease Control, there has been a rise in respiratory infections, including HMPV, flu, and RSV. However, this is expected during the winter season in the Northern Hemisphere.
  4. Normal Levels: WHO confirmed that the levels of acute respiratory infections, including HMPV, are within the usual range for the winter season. There have been no unusual outbreak patterns reported.
  5. Winter Health Burden: The WHO also highlighted that during the winter season, multiple respiratory viruses can circulate at the same time, which may put additional pressure on healthcare systems.
