Pune has reported 101 cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder. One suspected GBS death was reported from Solapur, with initial reports suggesting the infection may have originated in Pune.
The Maharashtra health department identified 18 more suspected cases in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, rural Pune, and nearby districts. Of the 101 patients, 16 are on ventilator support, and the majority of cases involve males (68 men and 33 women).
The age group analysis shows the highest number of cases among people aged 20-29 years (20 cases). Most patients (81) are from areas under Pune Municipal Corporation, 14 from Pimpri-Chinchwad, and 6 from other districts.
Health officials suspect contaminated water as a possible source and have sent water samples for testing. Blood samples from the patients ruled out dengue, Zika, and chikungunya, but 9 out of 11 stool samples tested positive for norovirus, with 3 also showing Campylobacter Jejuni bacterial infection.
The investigation continues to find the exact cause of the outbreak.
