In Amritsar, police have been deployed outside PVR Suraj Chanda Tara Cinema as the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) protests the release of Kangana Ranaut’s film Emergency. The film, set to release on January 17, has sparked controversy, with SGPC demanding a ban on it, claiming it defames the Sikh community. SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami wrote to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, stating the film was “politically motivated” and aimed to “defame Sikhs.”
The committee also submitted a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar requesting the film’s release be halted, particularly criticizing the portrayal of Sikh characters, especially Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.
