Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, feels like another world with its breathtaking Himalayan views, colorful monasteries, and fluttering prayer flags. Known as the “last Shangri-La,” it’s a hidden gem in North East India.
The Adventure
Our journey began in Guwahati, Assam, where we were met by our guide, Sange. After checking our permits at Bhalukpong, we ventured into Arunachal Pradesh’s stunning mountains. Our first stop was Bomdila, where we stayed with a local Monpa family and enjoyed traditional Tibetan food.
Monasteries and Scenic Beauty
We explored Bomdila’s market and visited the Gontse Gaden Rabgyel Lling Monastery, famous for its colorful mandalas. The trip continued to the serene Sangti Valley and the high-altitude Dirang, where we met a monk dedicated to making his monastery a place for everyone.
Crossing Sela Pass
Driving over Sela Pass, one of the highest motorable passes in the world, offered stunning views and a chilly adventure. The colorful prayer flags and the warm local chai made the journey unforgettable.
Tawang Highlights
Arriving in Tawang was a thrill. The Tawang Monastery, the second largest Tibetan monastery globally, was a highlight. We also visited the Thuk Choening Nunnery and the vibrant Khinme Monastery.
A Unique Experience
Arunachal Pradesh’s blend of culture, scenery, and friendly people made this journey exceptional. Tawang is perfect for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure.
