Austin Butler has been chosen to play the iconic role of Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming adaptation of American Psycho. This new take on Bret Easton Ellis’ 1991 novel won’t be a remake of the 2000 film starring Christian Bale but will bring a fresh perspective to the story, potentially adding a more erotic twist. Guadagnino, known for Call Me by Your Name and Challengers, will direct the film with a script by Scott Z. Burns.
Before Butler was cast, Jacob Elordi was rumored to play Bateman but didn’t land the role. Interestingly, both Butler and Elordi portrayed Elvis in separate films directed by Baz Luhrmann and Sofia Coppola. The original American Psycho followed Bateman, a Wall Street investment banker and serial killer in the 1980s.
Luca Guadagnino recently completed filming After the Hunt, starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield. Austin Butler was last seen in Masters of the Air and will appear in Dune 2.
