“Congress Questions Fairness In Rights Panel Chief Appointment”

The Congress has expressed strong dissent over the appointment of Justice V Ramasubramanian as NHRC chairperson, calling the selection process “fundamentally flawed.” Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge argued that the process lacked inclusivity and fairness, bypassing the tradition of mutual consultation.

The opposition had proposed Justice Rohinton Nariman and Justice KM Joseph, citing their dedication to constitutional values and representation of minority communities. Justice Nariman, from the Parsi community, and Justice Joseph, from the Christian community, are known for their work in safeguarding rights and protecting marginalized groups.

Congress leaders criticized the Selection Committee for relying on numerical majority to finalize decisions, disregarding legitimate concerns. They emphasized that diverse leadership is crucial for the NHRC to represent India’s pluralistic society and protect vulnerable communities.
