Tensions between India and Pakistan are rising again after a deadly attack in Kashmir earlier this week. The Indian Army Chief, General Upendra Dwivedi, is visiting Kashmir on Friday to review security and may visit the site of the attack. This comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised to find the attackers and bring them to justice.
Both India and Pakistan have taken strong steps against each other. India has put a water-sharing treaty on hold, while Pakistan has shut its airspace to Indian airlines. Because of this, flights to the US and Europe are now taking longer with rerouted paths.
The Indian stock market reacted to the tensions — key indexes dropped by about 1%, the rupee fell, and bond yields increased.
Many are now worried that India could strike Pakistan, like it did in 2019 after a similar attack. Some leaders from Modi’s BJP party are openly calling for military action.
The two countries have long disputed the Kashmir region. India says Pakistan supports militants in Kashmir — something Pakistan denies. Indian officials say the recent attack had links to Pakistan, with police naming two Pakistani nationals involved.
On Friday, authorities demolished the homes of two suspected militants, including one believed to be part of the attack. In many BJP-ruled states, officials have been tearing down homes of accused criminals — often Muslims — in what’s been called “bulldozer justice.”
Meanwhile, gunfire was reported along the Line of Control (LoC) between India and Pakistan, even though both countries agreed to a ceasefire in 2021.
