“BJP’s 12-Hour Strike Partly Disrupts Life in West Bengal”

On August 28, 2024, a 12-hour shutdown called by the BJP partly disrupted daily life in West Bengal. This strike was in protest against the police response to a recent protest march to the state secretariat.

In Kolkata, the usual weekday activity was missing. The number of buses, auto-rickshaws, and taxis was significantly lower, and private vehicles were scarce. However, markets and shops remained open. Schools and colleges continued with their regular schedules, but many private offices had reduced attendance, with some employees working from home.

The shutdown followed a protest rally that turned chaotic. The BJP’s West Bengal President, Sukanta Majumder, called for the bandh after a violent confrontation occurred during the demonstration.

Additional Updates:

  • Mamata Banerjee’s Response: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her grief over the recent rape and murder of a doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and dedicated the foundation day of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad to the victim. She offered condolences and called for justice.
  • TMC Protests: Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers protested against the BJP’s bandh. Train services between Bangaon and Sealdah, which had been disrupted, have now resumed.

Stay tuned for further updates on this situation.
