New Delhi: The concept of “One Nation, One Election” is set to become a reality during the current term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. This idea, discussed for a while in Parliament, aims to synchronize elections across the country.
In his Independence Day speech, PM Modi emphasized the need for simultaneous elections to avoid disruptions caused by frequent polls. A committee chaired by former President Ramnath Kovind has already submitted its report, recommending that Lok Sabha and state assemblies elections be held together initially, followed by synchronized local body elections.
The Law Commission is expected to support this move soon. The proposed plan suggests holding simultaneous elections for Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies starting in 2029. It also includes a provision for a unity government in cases of hung assemblies or no-confidence motions.
Despite the government’s push, there are concerns. The opposition has raised constitutional issues and potential disruptions to governance. Regional parties worry about their ability to address local issues amidst national elections. Additionally, the cost of updating electronic voting machines (EVMs) every 15 years is projected to be around ₹10,000 crore.
