On August 28, 2024, a 12-hour shutdown called by the BJP partly disrupted daily life in West Bengal. This strike was in protest against the police response to a recent protest march to the state secretariat.
In Kolkata, the usual weekday activity was missing. The number of buses, auto-rickshaws, and taxis was significantly lower, and private vehicles were scarce. However, markets and shops remained open. Schools and colleges continued with their regular schedules, but many private offices had reduced attendance, with some employees working from home.
The shutdown followed a protest rally that turned chaotic. The BJP’s West Bengal President, Sukanta Majumder, called for the bandh after a violent confrontation occurred during the demonstration.
