“1950s Ocean Liner To Sink As Largest Artificial Reef”

The iconic SS United States, once the fastest transatlantic ocean liner, is set to start a new chapter as the world’s largest artificial reef. After decades of uncertainty and failed restoration projects, the ship has been purchased by Okaloosa County, Florida, and will be sunk off the coast of Destin by 2026. Measuring 1,000 feet in length,

This transformation is part of Okaloosa County’s effort to boost eco-tourism and marine biodiversity in the region. The SS United States will join over 500 existing artificial reefs, adding to a thriving marine ecosystem. Known as “America’s Flagship,” the ship once carried famous passengers, including John F. Kennedy, Grace Kelly

Though the ship will no longer sail the seas, its legacy will continue as an underwater sanctuary.
