Alex Michelsen stunned 2023 Australian Open finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 win on Monday, securing a spot in the second round.
The 20-year-old American played aggressive and clever tennis, hitting powerful forehands and backhands that left Tsitsipas struggling. Though Michelsen faced a few challenges, including three double faults, it was Tsitsipas’ double fault at a crucial break point that sealed the match.
“I had a specific game plan for Stef, and it worked well,” Michelsen said. “It was a solid performance, but I’ll try to play even more aggressively next time.”
This marks Michelsen’s first Top 20 win at a major and pushes him to a career-high No. 41 in the ATP rankings. He now faces either Martin Landaluce or James McCabe.
Tsitsipas, a former semi-finalist at Melbourne, has struggled in recent majors, exiting early at Wimbledon and the US Open last year.
