A tragic stampede at the Lord Venkateswara Swamy temple in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, claimed the lives of at least six people and left 40 others injured. The incident occurred on Wednesday when hundreds of devotees rushed to get tickets for the Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam at the temple on Tirumala Hills. The stampede happened when the gates were opened, and people rushed in.
The injured have sustained muscle and skin injuries, and are receiving treatment. Most of them are expected to recover by evening. The 10-day Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam begins on January 10, attracting thousands of devotees.
Leaders including President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed their condolences. Other political figures, including Rahul Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal, also offered their support to the victims and their families.
