Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia have joined the Congress party and will run in the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections. Vinesh Phogat, 30, will compete for the Julana seat, currently held by the Jannayak Janta Party’s Amarjeet Dhanda, while Bajrang Punia, also 30, will run for the Badli seat.
The two wrestlers met with Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, and their entry into the party is seen as a strategic move to strengthen Congress’s position, especially as it negotiates an alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the elections.
Phogat and Punia’s addition is expected to boost Congress’s appeal in Haryana, a state currently dominated by the BJP. Vinesh Phogat’s recent support for farmers’ protests in Haryana could also help the party connect with local voters.
The Congress and AAP are working on a seat-sharing agreement, with discussions ongoing about how many seats each party will contest. The Congress hopes that Phogat and Punia’s popularity will help them win more votes and potentially improve their chances against the BJP.
