The CAT 2024 exam, organized by IIM Calcutta, raised the bar this year, offering a more challenging experience for candidates in Slot 1. The DILR (Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning) section saw an increase in the number of questions, going from 66 to 68, adding extra difficulty. Despite the increase in questions, the exam still lasted 120 minutes, with candidates given 40 minutes per section.
In terms of difficulty, the VARC (Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension) section was relatively easy, resembling previous years’ patterns. However, the DILR section was deemed to be easy to moderate, while the QA (Quantitative Ability) section proved to be the most challenging part of the exam, with a noticeable increase in difficulty compared to 2023.
According to Ramnath Kanakadandi, Senior Course Director at T.I.M.E., the increase in the number of questions in the DILR section took students by surprise. On the other hand, Bhushan Bapat, Head of CAT Academics at Supergrads, mentioned that despite the increased challenge, the overall difficulty level was still moderate. He also noted that the tough paper would likely lead to higher cutoffs, making this year’s exam more competitive.
With the higher level of difficulty, this year’s CAT 2024 sets the stage for a more challenging admissions process. The increased competition and higher cutoffs will make it tougher for candidates to secure top scores, leading to a highly competitive environment for those vying for a spot in the top MBA programs.
